QUEENSTOWN WINE TOURS

OUR wine story

Queenstown is a great base to explore the Central Otago, renowned for its world-class Pinot Noir and winemaking history that dates back to the 1860s gold rush era, when early settlers first planted grapevines. However, the region’s harsh climate and isolation made large-scale viticulture difficult, and for over a century, wine remained a minor pursuit.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that pioneering winemakers recognised Central Otago’s potential, particularly its cool climate, long sunshine hours, and unique schist soils—ideal for growing Pinot Noir and other cool-climate varietals.

Visionaries like Alan Brady, who planted the first modern vineyard near Gibbston, laid the foundation for what would become a globally recognized wine region. The 1990s saw rapid growth, with vineyards expanding into Bannockburn, Cromwell, Bendigo, Wanaka, and Alexandra. Today, Central Otago is celebrated for its elegant, expressive wines and its boutique, hands-on approach to winemaking. The region continues to thrive, driven by innovation, sustainability, and a deep respect for the land and its stories.
