Domaine Thomson Vineyard, Cromwell, NZ

DOMAINE-THOMSON wines

Domaine Thomson is one of Central Otago's most distinctive wine estates, bringing together the winemaking traditions of New Zealand and Burgundy through a unique two hemisphere philosophy. Nestled on the sun drenched slopes of Mount Pisa overlooking Lake Dunstan, the estate is renowned for producing exceptional single vineyard Pinot Noir from one of Central Otago's most spectacular vineyard sites. Combining organic viticulture, breathtaking scenery and French influence, Domaine Thomson offers a truly memorable wine tasting experience in the Queenstown wine region.

Established in 2000 by PM and the late David Hall Jones, Domaine Thomson was inspired by a shared passion for Burgundy and a vision of crafting world class Pinot Noir in both France and New Zealand. The winery is named after David's great great grandfather, John Turnbull Thomson, the pioneering surveyor who mapped much of Central Otago during the 1850s. His legacy remains deeply woven into the estate, celebrating both the history and landscapes that define the region today.

Unlike many wineries, Domaine Thomson focuses exclusively on Pinot Noir from its 14 hectare certified organic Mount Pisa vineyard. Planted on elevated north east facing terraces overlooking the Cromwell Basin, the vineyard benefits from free draining glacial soils, a warm mesoclimate and cool alpine nights, producing wines of exceptional concentration, elegance and purity. Every vineyard is organically certified, while biodynamic principles and minimal intervention winemaking allow the unique character of the site to shine through in every vintage.

The award winning cellar door reflects the winery's unique identity, combining contemporary New Zealand design with subtle French influences. Visitors can experience both Central Otago Pinot Noir and wines from Domaine Thomson's Burgundy vineyards, creating a rare opportunity to compare two of the world's most celebrated Pinot Noir regions side by side. This remarkable connection between the Old World and New World sets Domaine Thomson apart as one of New Zealand's most distinctive wine experiences.

A visit to Domaine Thomson is an opportunity to explore a winery unlike any other in Central Otago. From its organically farmed Mount Pisa vineyard and panoramic alpine views to its unique Burgundy connection and exceptional Pinot Noir, Domaine Thomson offers a wine experience that celebrates heritage, craftsmanship and the enduring pursuit of excellence across two hemispheres.
