The story of Quartz Reef began in 1996 when Rudi Bauer recognised the extraordinary potential of Bendigo's north facing slopes. The first commercial vines were planted on Bendigo Station in 1998, creating one of the pioneering vineyards in the subregion. Named after the vast quartz deposits beneath the vineyard, the estate has remained committed to producing wines that genuinely reflect the unique soils, climate and landscape of Central Otago.
Quartz Reef is one of only a handful of New Zealand wineries to hold both Demeter Biodynamic and BioGro Organic certification. Every grape is hand harvested from the single estate vineyard, where biodynamic farming encourages healthy soils, thriving biodiversity and vines that naturally express the character of the land. The winery is renowned for its award winning Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and world class Méthode Traditionnelle sparkling wines, crafted using the traditional bottle fermentation method and recognised as some of New Zealand's finest sparkling wines.
