Chard farm vineyard
Chard Farm Vineyard is one of the pioneering wineries in the Gibbston Valley, Central Otago, with a rich history rooted in determination and vision. Established in the late 1980s by Rob Hay, who studied viticulture in Germany, Chard Farm was among the first vineyards planted in the region. Nestled on a dramatic terrace overlooking the Kawarau River, the estate offers a breathtaking landscape that matches the character of its wines.
The vineyard’s unique location, with north-facing slopes and glacially formed soils, provides ideal conditions for growing premium Pinot Noir, the varietal for which Chard Farm is best known. Their single-vineyard Pinot Noirs—such as the Tiger, Viper, and Mata-Au—highlight distinct expressions of terroir and are consistently celebrated for their elegance and complexity. The vineyard also produces outstanding examples of Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris.
Chard Farm remains family-owned and deeply committed to sustainable practices. Visitors to the vineyard enjoy a warm, welcoming atmosphere with guided tastings in the rustic cellar door. Its proximity to Queenstown and historic role in Gibbston's wine journey make it a must-visit for anyone seeking to experience the heart of Central Otago winemaking.
