TARRAS VINEYARD
Tarras Vineyard, nestled in Central Otago's Bendigo subregion, is a boutique winery established in 2002 by Hayden Johnston, a Dunedin native of Ngāi Tahu descent. Situated on elevated river terraces over 100 meters above the valley floor, the vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate and diverse soils of clay, silt, and sand, ideal for cultivating premium Pinot Noir.
The vineyard's flagship wine, The Canyon Pinot Noir, is produced only in exceptional vintages and has garnered significant acclaim, including a Gold Medal at the International Wine Challenge in London. This single-vineyard wine is celebrated for its expressive fruit, floral notes, and long, silky finish.
Complementing the vineyard is The Canyon, a striking event venue perched above a dramatic schist rock canyon.Originally a restaurant at Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell, the building was relocated and repurposed by Johnston, showcasing his commitment to sustainability and innovation. The venue now hosts weddings, conferences, and other events, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Johnston also produces wines under the KURU KURU label, inspired by his Māori heritage and named after his fourth great-grandmother, Kuru Kuru of the Ngāi Tahu tribe. These wines feature her moko kauae on the label, honoring her legacy and the family's deep connection to the land. Tarras Vineyard stands as a testament to the fusion of family heritage, sustainable viticulture, and the unique terroir of Central Otago.
